Plumbing is a skilled work with pipes, tubing and plumbing fixtures water systems and drainage. Its system is quite complex for most people and fixtures are quite a hard job to do. So, let us go through to most common questions about plumbing so that learning is convenient and can help us learn to do it by ourselves.

How to identify plumbing problems?

The most common plumbing problems are pipe leaks, faucet drips and clog drainage. These are the problems that are easy to repair. For pipe leaks, the initial identification of pipe leaks could be the unexplained rise of water bills. For faucet drips, is the continuous flow of water even if it is turned off. Clog drainage usually happens in our sink, where water overflows because it is unable to drain due to buildup of materials in the drainage.

How to fix leaking pipes?

First, you have to determine the source of leakage. Once you’ve found it, turn off the water from its main source. Open the faucets on the water line to relieve pressures or drain the water from the pipe by opening the faucets of bleed valves located below the leaks. Then, wrap a rubber around the leaking joint and apply a stainless steel hose clamp. Tighten the clamp with a screwdriver or a socket wrench to secure the rubber around the leak. Soak water-activated fiberglass-resin tape in water, wrap it around the leak and smooth it with gloved hands. Allow it to cure as directed before restoring the water. For leaks around fitting, dry the surface, mix two-part epoxy and apply it over and around the leak. Allow it to cure as directed.

What are the ways to repair faucet drips?

Fixing faucet drips is very simple. Before anything else, determine first what type of faucet you are using. Then, turn off water supply. Leaks will likely be caused from the handle. Use the crescent wrench to tighten the packing nut. If this doesn’t fix the problem, replace the packing underneath the faucet handle and on the compression stem. It could be a washer, o-ring or even twin. Drips from the spout will require replacing the washer or a corroded valve seat. If you have the faucet disassembled, be sure to lubricate the stem threads with plumber’s silicone grease. After fix attempt, turn the water supply back on and then turn on the faucet.

How to fix clogged drainage?

Here is a simple and affordable way to fix clogged drains. You will only need 1 cup white vinegar, 1/2 cup baking soda, 32 ounces boiling water and a plunger (if necessary). First, remove stopper and any material that build up in the drain. Then, add 1/2 cup baking soda into the drain, add 1 cup white vinegar. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, then add 32 oz. boiling water. If necessary, gently plunge, then run hot water. Repeat for a second or third time and then lastly, replace stopper.

These products are made from polymers which are highly water resistant. They are mainly water-based or oil-based solutions. Oil-based waterproofers last longer compared to water-based solutions since they penetrate deeply into the surface especially wood surfaces. Water based finishes are cheaper, easy to clean and can be applied even before the surface dries up as damp surfaces would accept water based solutions easily than oil-based solutions.

Waterproofers are durable and better than sealants since unlike sealants they prevent water movement through the wall or concrete from outside. They can be directly applied especially if there are no holes or cracks on the surface. If holes exist, repair should be done first to seal the holes. Also the surface should be properly cleaned before application of water proofers.
They are used to prevent formation of mildew, moulds, and to some extent corrosion of the surface as a result of excessive moisture or dampness on the wall. In addition, they have the following functions: some waterproofers protect walls from harmful UV rays and damage from the sun. They prevent surfaces from peeling off due to strong sun rays. They also have a pigment that improves the appearance of the surface applied by giving them an appealing appearance. They bring out the natural beauty of wood or add colors. Another advantage of waterproofers is that they prevent the surfaces from tear and wear caused by feet traffic and deck chairs. Still, they prevent cracking, wood warping and decking for wooden surfaces.

Water in this pipe arrives cold, of course, so if you want to get hot water, it must pass through a hot water heater.

If you have to ask whether or not you need a plumber to help you out with a plumbing problem, the answer is probably yes – while they are expensive, there are several ways you can save a bit of dough here. Check out ServiceMagic, which is a great website that will connect you (for FREE!) with four pre-approved plumbers in your area who will then all give you estimates about the cost of your project, allowing you to easily priceshop to find the best deal.

If you have a serious plumbing emergency, the best thing to do is to find the water meter in your home, because right beside it you will find the master shut off valve for your home. Once the flood has stopped, then you can think about finding a plumber to repair things for you. If you’re interested in learning more about how plumbing works, check out the video below.

A surprising number of domestic plumbing concerns are easily addressed without the aid of a professional plumber, which means you can try the following ten tips for easy home plumbing the next time you run into a problem with your water.

1. Test for water leaks in the house by stopping all water usage for half an hour and watching the water meter to see if the numbers on it change.

2. When tightening the bolts on a toilet, use your hands instead of a wrench, since people who use wrenches often end up damaging the delicate material of the toilet.

3. Running toilets are often caused by flapper chain problems. To fix them, just bring up the lid and rearrange the chain so that there is some slack between its flapper end and lever end.

4. Another cause of running toilets is an old and eroded flapper. To fix this, just take it off the bracket that usually attaches it to the toilets mechanism, then bring it your local hardware store and ask for a replacement for it. Attach the new flapper the way you removed the old one.

5. Fix clogs in both toilets and sinks with a plunger. This simple device can actually solve the most stubborn of plugs.

6. Use a tank-less water heater instead of a storage water heater to avoid running out of hot water in the shower.

7. For clogs that are more deeply lodged, use a plumbers snake instead, which is a metal cord you can slip into drains to clear clogs or obstructions to water flow.

8. To fix a leak with the drain connections of your sink, try to tighten the connections with a wrench to return them to their proper position.

9. A leaking showerhead is usually just suffering from eroded rubber washers. These are very easily replaced, so always have a few extra washers handy just in case.

10. Do not hesitate to call in an expert when you think the problem is beyond your capabilities. Some plumbing difficulties are truly advanced, and you should learn to distinguish between those problems you can fix by yourself and those that require a specialists touch.

The garbage disposal is an indispensable part of our kitchens, and should ideally last for about a decade of use.Unfortunately, whether due to simple misfortune or ill usage, most garbage disposals live far shorter lives than that. Most garbage disposal problems have to do with a piece of trash clogging the device, and are actually possible to fix by yourself. Here are five simple tips you may use to fix your broken garbage disposal.

1. If you try to run the garbage disposal and it does not grind, you might want to try checking that the machinery itself is not jammed. Nearly all garbage disposals have a hole (often shaped like a hex) on the underside that you may use to crank them loose when they jam. You may use a hex/Allen key or perhaps a garbage disposal tool.
2. If you have the same problem described in the preceding itemyou try to turn on the disposal and it refuses to do anything but make a low humming noisebut you cannot find the hex-shaped hole under your garbage disposal, you may try cranking loose the blades from the other end. Get a broom or some other tough pole, turn off the disposal, then try to make the blades rotate by forcing in the pole from the top and trying to move them.
3. If your garbage disposal refuses to turn on, you should check the bottom part of your disposal for the reset button. This button usually sticks out when your disposal has been overloaded and pushing it back in should solve your problem in a flash.
4. If your disposals sink seems to drain very, very slowly, you probably have a clog in the pipes or drain holes of your machine. Most often, this is caused by the accumulation of fat. It is strongly advised not to put fatty material in the disposal because the fat tends to stick to the pipes and blocks themmuch like what it does to your heart. So, to repair a garbage disposal with this problem, you shall have to switch it off and get ready for some thorough cleaning.
5. Another cause of garbage disposal clogs is usually the introduction of inorganic materials to the machine, or perhaps fibrous items that tend to jam the blades. You can repair your garbage disposal in such a case by using some tongs (never your hand) to pull out the material.

Water Heaters have become an essential part of our daily lives.

They provide the hot water that we need to get to work or school in time; they are indispensable part of the modern day bathroom and require proper maintenance and care to ensure proper functioning.

When do you know that your water heater is not working properly?

It is easy to diagnose when your water heater is not functioning properly:

The water heater is not heating properly.

The water is discolored or rusty.

The smell or odor of the water is not properly.

The water heater leaks or makes strange noises.

A set of simple rules can be followed to ensure that your water heater has a long life and you don’t have to call the plumber often to repair or replace your water heater.

1. Sediment Buildup

Sediment buildup is often one of the most common problems in modern day water heaters; your water heater over time can accumulate sediments in the bottom.

These sediments can be cleaned by using a hose or a brush and water. It is advisable that you regularly de-sediment your water heater to ensure that there is no excessive sediment buildup.

2. Anode Rod Problems

The anode rod is one of the most important components of the water heater and can malfunction resulting in problems. It is advisable that you check your anode rod regularly to ensure that it is functioning properly. A common issue is the anode rod getting corroded and needing replacement.

3. Bad Odor

Bad odor from the water heater is usually because of bacteria in the heater; if you experience bad odor, you can easily fix this by cleaning the heater with bleach. Bleach the heater and let it stay for a while before flushing it for best results.

4. Water is too hot or cold

If the water is too hot or cold, oftentimes, this may simply be because the thermostat settings are not right. You can adjust the thermostat to fix this.

When do you know you have to replace your heater?

A gas water heater has a lifespan of eight to twelve years, and in some cases upto fifteen years.

You know it is time to replace when the water heater has gone well past its age and creates problems.

Rusty water is a common indication that your water heater is old and needs replacement.

Plumbing emergencies may tempt you to simply pick a random name from the Yellow Pages. And this may result in having to pay exorbitant fees, with the same exact problem cropping up in few days. You may even encounter brand new problems as a result of the shoddy work of the plumber. So ask around now. Interview people whose word you can trust, such as family and friends. Make sure they speak from personal experience. How quickly did the plumber arrive after an emergency call? How long did the work take?
